The Basics

An MCM Home Inspection provides unbiased information about the condition of a home’s systems and components as of the time of the inspection. As part the process, Mike will report any inspected components and systems which are found to be deficient, not working correctly, unsafe or close to the end of their service. The basics includes a visual inspection of the accessible interior and exterior systems and structures, such as the roof, plumbing, electrical, furnace, air conditioning, and major appliances.  You can take a look at the complete checklist here.

Mold Sampling

Many homes wind up with mold somewhere.  Anywhere moisture manages to penetrate the shell of the home becomes a prime breeding ground for mold.  If mold is discovered during the comprehensive inspection, a homeowner may request further tests to determine whether it is a concern.  Mike will make sure that you are fully aware of the risks and your options, so that you can make informed decisions.

Cracked Concrete Wall

Radon

Radon is a radioactive material that can be distributed in the soil below and surrounding a home. If the concentration is strong enough, the radon can pose a health hazard to the inhabitants of the home.   The radon can become trapped in the enclosed structure, and those in the home can be exposed over an extended period of time to a degree that they are endangered.  A radon inspection will check on the levels of radon in the air. If radon is present and is a concern, some things can be done to remediate the home to safe levels.

Male Scientist

Meth Testing

When someone produces or uses illegal methamphetamines in homes, sheds, garages, trailers, and businesses—places where other people live, sleep, eat, and work—these areas are left contaminated with potentially dangerous levels of toxic chemicals.  Exposure to these chemicals may cause symptoms similar to those experienced by meth users, including nose and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and breathing difficulties.  Before you purchase a property, or if you suspect your existing property may be contaminated, the Health Department recommends that you test the property for chemical contamination.  Mike will collect the samples so that the necessary tests can be conducted to ensure peace of mind.

Renovation

Lead Based Paint Testing

Lead-Based Paint (LBP) was banned for use in houses in 1978, however, in houses built before 1978, there is a possibility that LBP is still present. Dust from LBP is the leading cause of lead poisoning in children which is a serious and preventable environmental health problem for both children and adults. In children, elevated lead exposure can cause decreased IQ, damage to the nervous system, and a range of other developmental and behavioral problems.  Mike is able to conduct the tests to verify whether lead paint is present.

Insulation Installation

Asbestos Sampling

Like lead paint, asbestos was a common material used in home building for decades. The material is extremely fire retardant and was commonly used as insulation in older homes. Unfortunately, when disturbed – such as when people are wondering around the attic or installing new insulation – the fibers in the asbestos can become airborne and be inhaled. The barbs on the fibers can become stuck in the lungs and lead to cancer many years later. Mike can inform you if the potential for asbestos is present.
